Links and Navigation

Crawlers will generally follow only simple links to traverse and index a web site. It's therefore recommended that you make sure your site is easily navigable by crawlers:-
  • Link to all the main sections of the site from your main page.

  • Add internal links between appropriate pages. This increases the chance that the crawler will find a path that will eventually include all your content.

  • It is probably not a good idea to rely solely on JavaScript or CGI forms or dropdown boxes, Java-based navigation schemes, or imagemaps. Crawlers may not be able to follow these link types, and even though they might look nice, they could probably impair your chances for getting your site fully indexed.

If you must use these devices for user navigation, there is nothing to stop you adding text links as well (have you noticed how many graphically-intensive sites have a set of text links at the bottom of each page - they are doing this for a reason).

  • Consider adding a "sitemap" with links to all your pages, or atleast to all the main sections. If the crawler runs across this page it will most likely cover the rest of your site - you might even want to submit your sitemap page.
