Database Flattening
Search engines will generally not traverse links which contain a ? character in them. Most database-based sites contain many of these types of links and therefore may not be fully indexed.
A possible work-round is to "flatten your database", which means that although a database remains behind the system, all the database content (or just the key entries), are periodically exported into standard HTML pages.
We would argue this could be a reasonable tactic if you are providing useful content (not repeated garbage etc., or hundreds of near identical pages) in all these pages. If the extra pages are valuable and worth people find in the search results, we can't see why this should be a problem.
Although this could involves additional work on an on-going basis, the big advantage is that this gives search engines more content to index, and also makes it more likely that they can fully traverse your site by following the links on these additional pages.
If this sounds like too much work, there are ways that you could automate this process:- - You could write a program, or script, that exports the database into HTML files on a periodic basis.
or - You could create pages using technologies such as PHP or ASP so that to the search engine they appear like static pages, but under the hood, the information is coming directly out of the database.
