One Million Search Engines?

You've probably seen adverts promising to submit your web site to "one million" (or similar astronomical numbers) search engines.

When you think about these ads, it should raise two questions:
  1. Are there really "one million" search engines?

  2. Do you really need to be listed in a lot of search engines?
Here's our opinion:-
  • There are probably a few hundred (?), real, general-purpose, search engines, as well as some more search engines on more specialist topics (example: a search engine which only contains sites relating to the chemical industry). (You could try looking in DMOZ to get an idea of how many search engines they list).

  • There are some more search-engines which simply display results from one or more other search engines, and don't have their own results.
    (so you probably can't separately submit to these anyway)

  • When you search the web, you probably use one of the leading search engines like Yahoo!, Altavista, or Google, etc. So, probably, do your friends, so do their friends... and so on!
The obvious questions are:
  • If few people are searching in one of the lesser search engines, is there much point in being listed there?

  • And how can a submission service claim one million then? Of course, it does depend on what you could as a "search engine", but some submission services could increase the number that they count by, for example, including Free For All Links (FFA) pages.

An FFA page is usually a scrolling list of submitted links: as new sites are submitted, old ones drop off.
  • Many FFAs get their submissions from either occassionally webmasters submitting their sites or from automated submissions. Depending on the FFA, there might be few people actually browsing the links.

  • Some FFAs receive many submissions: so the links may not last too long - perhaps even just hours or minutes.

  • It's common that by submitting to an FFA page, you are also agreeing to be emailed by the owner. The owner might set up his FFA not as an attempt to establish some kind of directory or search tool... The owner might set up his FFA page purely so he can send you his adverts in an e-mail message ("thank you for submitting to my FFA page, would you like to sign up for this or that?").

  • If you submit to many FFA pages, you could get a lot of e-mail - perhaps even one per page.

  • When was the last time you bought something as a result of an FFA link?
This is why we don't submit to FFAs anymore.

However you're entitled to a different opinion if you want - so if you disagree, go ahead and submit to FFAs.

But: remember that submitting to lots of FFAs can generate a lot of e-mail ads sent to you. You might not want to use your primary e-mail address! Instead you could get a separate e-mail account just for FFA submissions, so your primary e-mail account does not become clogged up with many "thank you" messages and ads.

Some experts in search engine marketing recommending optimizing their site for just a few of the leading search engines and not even bothering with the rest. Why? Because they believe that a sustained high rank, for a popular keyword, on any one of the leading search engines, could generate lots of traffic.


If you want to: go ahead submit to one million "search engines".

Or you could: narrow your focus - and concentrate on getting listed, and high ranked, in the top few dozen
